HTC One X and One XL rooted
The Snapdragon S4-based One X has been rooted, thanks to kennethpenn? of XDA-developers. This isn't a bootloader unlock, but it is full root, so apps like Titanium Backup will work just fine. It's also been confirmed to work on the AT&T version (I'm enjoying root now yay!). The developer has been nice enough to make a neat little one-click package that will do the work for you. All the relevant files are installed automatically, and when it's done you have Super SU installed, too. So no confusing ADB commands to follow on this one. The usual warnings do apply, you're rooting at your own risk and anything that happens to your phone is your fault and no one elses. Are you also enjoying root? Let us know in the forums.

Alcatel OneTouch 995 hands-on
Alcatel's OneTouch 995 first graced our pages back in November, which promised pumped-up specs and a departure from the company's traditional low-end lineup. We've now managed to lay our hands upon the device, and while it sports only Gingerbread (which contradicts those Ice Cream Sandwich rumors), it's really quite nice -- especially given the low price. While the hardware is relatively unassuming, that's not a bad thing. Instead, the OneTouch 995 manages to include just enough quality components to make the handset both attractive and functional. It features a 1.4GHz CPU, along with an admirable 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 IPS LCD display and a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. We were also pleased to see a stock Android 2.3 interface, and Alcatel's addition of a micro-HDMI port with DLNA support is most definitely welcome. The enclosure itself is quite plasticky, but it's also comfortable to hold. We're told the OneTouch 995 will arrive on the market in the near-term, and will sell in the neighborhood of $270. As an important feature for some, it'll also be available in a variety of colors. To see the company's finest handset to date, be sure to check out our gallery below.

Confused 'Total Blackout' players taste a toilet seat
Syfy
What could it be? On "Total Blackout," contestants sometimes have to rely on their taste buds to tell them.
By Ree Hines
On the Syfy network's new lights-out reality competition, "Total Blackout," host Jaleel White takes delight in putting players through outrageous and often humiliating challenges. After all, in the dark, they have no idea what they're facing.
That's why some contestants reacted with yelps when they recently reached into a tank to feel around for a bra -- which could have just as easily been a spider. And it's why others trembled as they inhaled cautiously to identity what turned out to be someone's rear end -- which could have been ? well, that's about as bad as it gets. So far.
On the next episode, the gag-inducing gags just keep coming as players line up to identify one familiar item using only their mouths.
"Is it a boomerang?" one contestant asked after running his tongue along a toilet seat. "Feels like a boomerang."
Soon enough his old fraternity days came rushing back and he yelled out the correct answer with a smile.
But another challenger didn't find the humor in it.
After mouthing her way around the seat and biting the lid, she seemed stumped.
"Does it feel like anything you've had in your mouth before?" the ever-helpful host asked.
"Pthlpth! A toilet seat!" was all she had to say.
"Total Blackout" airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on SyFy.
Will you tune in to see what else the contestants have to do in the dark on the next "Total Blackout"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Project Sputnik: Dell's Ubuntu-based XPS13 laptop for developers
An internal innovation fund at Dell is helping create project Sputnik, an Ubuntu-based laptop aimed at developers. The hardware is Dell's XPS13 Ultrabook, and the OS is the latest version of Canonical's linux distro, Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS. So far the image contains drivers and patches for hardware, key tools and utilities (emacs, Vim, Chromium etc.,) and a native tool for github repository integration is incoming soon. Dell has also worked closely with Canonical on the project to ensure maximum hardware compatibility. As for developer tools, instead of bloating the system with a complex suite of applications, Sputnik has been designed to let users go to a github repository and pull down individual developer profiles; Android, Ruby and JavaScript being available right now, with more to follow. The install image is available right now via the more coverage link, and more details on the project will follow as it develops.
