Djokovic pounces to claim Melbourne three-peat

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic came up with his best tennis when it mattered most to reassert his grand slam dominance over Andy Murray on Sunday and become the first man to win three successive Australian Open titles in the professional era.

The Serbian world number one played 171 minutes of cat and mouse with his British rival before pouncing when the U.S. Open champion blinked and racing away to a 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-2 victory.

There was no ripping off of the shirt and no victory roar like Rod Laver Arena witnessed last year, but there was no disguising Djokovic's delight at claiming a fourth title at Melbourne Park.

His three successive titles were a first since Roy Emerson won his fifth straight in 1967, while a quartet of crowns matches Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, the latter being on hand to present him with the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.

"What a joy, it's an incredible feeling to win this trophy again. This is definitely my favorite grand slam. I love this tournament. I love this court," said Djokovic, who lost to Murray at Flushing Meadows in September.

"Every tournament, especially the major tournaments, is very special (but) winning it three in a row, it's incredible."

The similarity of playing style meant the match, although studded with some brilliant rallies, was not the classic that fans have come to expect from grand slam finals in the golden age of men's tennis.

So little separated the two 25-year-old baseliners, however, that two hours and 51 minutes of the contest had passed before the first break of serve.

Crucially, it went to Djokovic and 49 minutes later he was celebrating his sixth grand slam title.

For Murray, hampered by a badly blistered toe, distracted at a key moment by a white feather and physically compromised by his four-hour semi-final against Federer, it was a third final defeat in four years in Australia.

The Scot took some solace from the fact that this match was a much tighter affair than his defeats by Federer in 2010 and Djokovic in 2011.

"There's going to be some obvious reasons for me feeling a little bit better," said Murray, who was hoping to become the first Briton to win the title since Fred Perry in 1934.

"The last few months have been the best tennis of my life. I made the Wimbledon final, won the Olympics, won the U.S. Open. I was close here as well. It was close.

"I know no one's ever won a slam the immediate one after winning their first one. It's not the easiest thing to do and I got extremely close."

SLIGHT EDGE

Djokovic needed nearly six hours to beat Rafa Nadal in last year's final and few were betting on a pre-midnight finish after the first two sets on Sunday took 133 minutes to get through.

The Serbian's aggression gave him a slight edge in the first set and he claimed five break points only for Murray to save them all and then scoot through the tiebreak 7-2.

Murray took the momentum into the second set, where he won the first seven points to earn his first three break points but he fluffed his chances and Djokovic saved his serve.

"After that I felt just mentally a little bit lighter and more confident on the court than I'd done in the first hour or so," said Djokovic.

A white feather which drifted down from the birds nesting in the rafters distracted Murray when he was serving during the tiebreak and he double faulted on his way to losing it 7-3.

"At this level it can come down to just a few points here or there," said Murray. "Probably my biggest chance was at the beginning of the second set, I didn't quite get it.

"When Novak had his chance at the end of the third, he got his."

Djokovic opened the key third set game with a brilliant winner that just caught the back of the line at the end of a 36-shot rally.

He closed it out to go 5-3 ahead when Murray smacked a forehand into the net tape and then won seven of the next nine games to claim the title.

"I didn't expect an easy match," said Djokovic. "You never get the grand slam trophy in an easy way. You have to earn it."

There was more success for 25-year-olds earlier in the day when Australians Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden clinched the mixed doubles title, beating Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak 6-3 7-5.

The day belonged to Djokovic, however.

"I'm just trying to play this game with 100 percent of devotion, love, passion, and fun also," he said. "I mean, 25 years-old and I won six grand slams and have a lot of trophies.

"It's amazing. I'm just trying to embrace this moment and enjoy it as much as I can and see where tomorrow brings me."

92% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (210) | Top Critics (50) | Fresh (185) | Rotten (16)

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

If there's one reason why you should see this film, it's to admire the wonderful performances from Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Cooper and Lawrence Shine in Linings.

New Jersey Contractor Sentenced in Workers' Comp Fraud Scheme

The president of a now-defunct Mercer County, N.J., construction company was sentenced to eight years in state prison for stealing more than $450,000, according to Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa.

New Jersey?s AG?s office reported that Herlindo Garcia-Merlos, 49, provided false and misleading information to his company?s workers? compensation carrier, failed to file tax returns or underreported wages for his business and himself to the New Jersey Department of Treasury.

Last year, Garcia-Merlos pleaded guilty to a criminal accusation charging him with two counts of second-degree theft by deception.

Garcia-Merlos was sentenced to eight years in state prison. In addition, he was ordered to pay $315,680 in restitution to New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Group and $135,462 in restitution to the New Jersey Department of Treasury.

?The lengthy prison sentence imposed upon this defendant should act as a strong deterrent to anyone who fails to provide adequate and lawful workers? compensation insurance,? Attorney General Chiesa said.

Garcia-Merlos was the president of the now-defunct Orients Construction Company, Inc. (Orients), located in Trenton. In March 2009, Garcia-Merlos ceased doing business as Orients and began doing business as Melrose Construction, Inc.

In pleading guilty, Garcia-Merlos admitted that, between February 2007 and April 2010, false and misleading information was provided to NJM Insurance Group. The investigation determined that the type of services rendered by Orients as well as the amount of payroll during the specified policy periods were not true. As a result of the fraud, Garcia-Merlos obtained reduced premiums that his company was not entitled to resulting in the premium difference of $315,680.

Acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Ronald Chillemi noted that Garcia-Merlos also pleaded guilty to stealing more than $135,462 by failing to file tax returns for his companies, Orients and Melrose Construction. The investigation determined that Garcia-Merlos failed to file tax returns for Orients and/or Melrose in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The investigation also determined that Garcia-Merlos underreported wages on his individual tax returns during the aforementioned years.

iMore editors' Choice: Scribblenauts, Ghostbusters, Trapit, Trall, and more!

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a ton of games, a smart news aggregator, and... did we say a ton of games?

Scribblenauts Remix - Michelle Haag

My daughter actually discovered this game on the iPad, and has played it non-stop ever since. Your goal is to help Maxwell get through each level by inventing objects to pass obstacles and challenges. Your imagination is the only limit in this game, as you come up with new and original ways to solve the puzzles. For example, in one level you might need to cross a river, so you type in the word 'bridge' and one appears for you to place in the right spot. Or maybe you need to get over a large cliff, so you type 'butterfly wings' and use them to soar over, unscathed. Scribblenauts Remix contains 40 levels from the original game plus 10 original levels and the Playground where you can create to your heart's content in a sandbox environment. The game has just been updated for Valentine's Day with all new content, too. Play on multiple devices with iCloud allowing you to seamlessly switch between them, share your scores with your Game Center friends, and so much more. You don't want to miss trying out Scribblenauts, just be warned that you'll be hooked right away!

Ghostbusters - Chris Parsons

If you're a fan of the Ghostbusters cartoon from the 80's then you'll want to check out the latest Ghostbusters game in the app store. History hasn't been all that nice to the franchise when it comes to video games but this latest rendition does a lot better than previous iterations out there of offering something for fans. Assemble your Ghostbuster team and take on some ghosts, you'll need to fight your way through numerous levels using an array of weapons and if those aren't sufficient, you'll have to power up and get better ones. Yes, there is a money making scheme here that suggests you get through the game fast by buying 'power cores' but overall it's not a bad game to sit back and play, especially if you're a fan of the cartoon. Now, who you gonna call?

Trapit for iPad - Joseph Keller

Trapit for iPad is news aggregator that learns what you like. Like Siri, Trapit was born out of DARPA?s CALO project, an effort to make an intelligent digital assisstant. Trapit works by asking you for a topic, Apple, for instance, and then asking you to find stories you like in order to teach Trapit what it should pull into that section. The more stories you like, the more Trapit is able to learn about how it should refine what news it shows you. If it shows you a story that isn?t relevant, might be spam, or is from a source you dislike, simple press the dislike button to get rid of it. As a service, Trapit is currently in beta, though the app itself is available for free on the App Store. Be sure to check it out, because it?s definitely worth a look.

Momonga Pinball Adventures - Ally Kazmucha

Every once in a while I find a game with a decent story line and easy game play that's a great time killer. Momonga Pinball Adventures is a super cute game that's a pretty cool spin off of classic pinball.

Momonga is the last squirrel left that wasn't' taken by a gang of owls. Panda trains him to go rescue is tribe. Training and rescuing equals pinball action. You'll have to hit targets, dodge objects, and come out alive in order to save your tribe.

It's an easy enough game for children to play but stimulating enough to keep the big kids in the house entertained as well. If you're looking for a twist on an old classic, definitely check out Momonga Pinball Adventures. It's a universal download for both iPhone and iPad too so you can enjoy on whichever you prefer.

Traal - Simon Sage

Traal is simple, free, and altogether intense stealth game. You control an abstract, nameless character through a dark maze full of treacherous obstacles and monstrous aberrations. Players have to collect scrolls written in an incomprehensible language in order to figure out where they are and where they're going. You have to be careful where you shine your light though, as the inhabitants will chase you down if you shine it on them. The dark music and stark, 8-bit-style graphics create an atmosphere perfect for a few jumps and frights. There's a refreshing absence of ads or in-app purchases here, which makes Traal a cozy, intimate get-together with you and your fear.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

ESPO Concerned about Obligation to Equip ... - LNG World News

ESPO Concerned About Obligation to Equip Core Ports with LNG Facilities

The EU Commission launched the so-called ?Clean Fuel for Transport Package?. This consist of a Communication on a European alternative fuels strategy and a proposed Directive on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure. An accompanying document describes the action plan for the development of LNG in shipping.

The package addresses all transport modes and its overall aim is to diminish Europe?s dependency on oil for its mobility and transport.

For maritime transport, the legislative package focuses on the development of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure and the promotion of shore side electricity for vessels at berth.

Within the proposed Directive, the Commission introduces an obligation for TEN-T core seaports to be equipped by 2020 with publicly accessible LNG refueling points for both maritime and inland waterway transport. A similar obligation is introduced for core inland ports by 2025.? In addition, the Commission introduces a more generic requirement for ports to be equipped with shore side electricity installations for waterborne vessels, provided this would be cost-effective and effectively lead to environmental benefits.

ESPO supports the development of LNG as a viable and green alternative fuel for ships and acknowledges that shore side electricity for vessels at berth is one of the potential solutions to address local air quality challenges in ports. ESPO therefore welcomes the fact that funding would be made available through the TEN-T calls for the further development of such projects.

ESPO however doubts whether imposing LNG refueling infrastructure in all TEN-T core ports would be appropriate, since there may not be a market for it in all of those ports, whereas there could be a market in other, non-core ports. ?We believe that LNG refueling points should be developed in those ports where this actually makes sense?, said ESPO Secretary General Patrick Verhoeven, ?We are concerned that imposing the development of EU co-funded LNG infrastructure in all core ports may in certain cases lead to the development of largely unused or underused facilities.?

In addition, ESPO considers that alternative solutions to the development of LNG and shore side electricity are and will become increasingly available in the near future. While fully supporting the aim of improving the environmental performance of maritime transport, ESPO believes that there are not ?silver bullet? type of solutions and that, therefore, a closer examination of the actual needs of individual ports is necessary.

VoIP Security Issues - The Pulse - XO Communications

By Himanshu Kapadia

VoIP (Voice over IP) services have been widely adopted by businesses of all sizes. As it applies to any popular technology, VoIP is getting attention from people with the wrong intensions.? As VoIP becomes a more and more common enterprise solution, it becomes more lucrative for people to exploit. VoIP uses IP transport so it?s vulnerable to all threats related to IP but it has some other specific threats as well.

Let?s take a look at the three primary questions we need to ask ourselves about VoIP, specifically the ?why, what and how of VoIP security.

Why Do We Need VoIP Security?

Here are a few examples of how VoIP vulnerabilities can be exploited:

Call Fraud ? By taking advantage of VoIP vulnerability hackers can send calls pretending to be someone else and can route long distance, international and premium rate calls. This can cause major financial loss in very short time. Fraud is a common problem across all industries, but it has become a major issue for VoIP users and providers.

Phishing over VoIP ? Phishing is very common in email world. Phishers use social engineering to get consumers? identities or account credentials. In VoIP world where phishers can spoof ?calling party identity?, these attempts become more effective. Also, the nature of VoIP makes it more difficult to track and catch such callers.

Eavesdropping ? This is a common way for someone to steal credentials, identities and proprietary information. By eavesdropping on VoIP calls hackers can steal phone numbers and account pin numbers allowing them to get control of users? accounts.

Other common security threats against VoIP are SPIT (Spam over Internet Telephony) and DoS attacks, which can interrupt service.

What Do We Need to Secure?

So now we know some of the different ways VoIP vulnerability can cause major financial losses and service interruption. We?re now going to look at what to secure in VoIP.

VoIP uses SIP (Session Initiation protocol) for signaling. This is a very effective signaling protocol but it?s text-based. If you can capture IP packets during a call setup process, you can easily go through captured packets using a basic protocol analyzer (please see my previous blog Basic Tools for VoIP Troubleshooting ?for more details on protocol analyzer) to get calling numbers, called numbers, user names and other kinds of information.

You can also capture media packets during a call which uses the RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) method. It?s very easy to recreate audio streams using captured RTP packets. Again, a basic protocol analyzer can do it without requiring much expertise. This is a huge problem for an enterprise and their proprietary information.

To make VoIP secure we need to make sure that signaling and media is secure and fail proof against any security attacks.

How Can We Secure VoIP?

There are many ways to address security threats against VoIP. As mentioned before VoIP calls use IP as a means of transport. We can apply all measures currently out there to secure an IP link to VoIP.? In terms of SIP services, some providers offer their services over the public internet which is difficult to secure. Other providers offer SIP services over IP-VPN (for example MPLS based IP-VPN) that segregate customers? VoIP traffic from other customers? traffic and the public Internet, which is more secure then over a public Internet solution.

Another level of security is protocol-based security. VoIP technology provides an encryption mechanism for both signaling and media. SIP can be run over TLS (Transport Layer Security) which is very common and a standard practice for web browsing. Media can be encrypted by following the SRTP (Secure Real-time Transport Protocol) mechanism. It?s one of the highest levels of security you can currently get for VoIP.

The first step you need to do to secure your network is to know the vulnerabilities of your network and know how you can address them.? Hopefully this basic information discussed here will help you move towards making your VoIP network more secure.

Do you have any questions about how to secure your VoIP platform?

Asteroid mining: Second company announces plans. Time to stake a claim?

Deep Space Industries said Tuesday it plans to launch small prospector missions to asteroids beginning in 2015. The goal of asteroid mining is to make space exploration more affordable.

Asteroids aren't just for dodging anymore. Less than a year after a company called Planetary Resources announced plans to survey, then mine, asteroids, a second company has set out its plans to turn orbiting piles of cosmic rubble into rocket fuel, solar panels, and trusses for spacecraft hundreds to thousands of miles above Earth.

Suddenly asteroid mining has the potential of becoming a competitive field.

The ultimate goal is to make space exploration and development more affordable by obtaining fuel and construction material from easy-to-reach sources that flit past Earth all the time, rather than the costlier method of hauling everything up from Earth.

As a start, representatives of Deep Space Industries (DSI) on Tuesday outlined the company's plans to launch small prospector missions to asteroids beginning in 2015. A year later, the firm plans to launch its first sample-return mission, which aims to bring back samples of an asteroid not by the cupful, but in 60- to 150-pound quantities.

Such amounts not only would present a bonanza for the research community. They also would provide pristine test material for mining, refining, and manufacturing techniques the company is developing for use in space.

To company chairman Rick Tumlinson, DSI's ultimate goals represent a logical next step beyond government-sponsored exploration programs. He drew an analogy between NASA's human-spaceflight program and the Lewis and Clark Expedition under Thomas Jefferson, which was followed by a westward flow of settlers.

"We are the settlers and shopkeepers" heading into this latest frontier, he added.

Over the past 32 years, astronomers have discovered about 9,000 near-Earth asteroids, largely with the goal of assessing the risk of a collision with Earth. But among those 9,000, about 1,700 require only about as much energy to reach as a trip to the moon ? an alluring prospect for cosmic prospectors interested in exploiting the asteroids' resource potential.

For all the various elements asteroids may provide ? from platinum to iron and silicon ? perhaps the most immediately valuable resource they carry is water ice, which can be used to make rocket fuel.

Therein lies the early money, according to officials with DSI and with Planetary Resources.

One early market, DSI officials say, could well be communications satellites. These run out of fuel long before their hardware fails. Although in principle these satellites could be refueled, sending that fuel from Earth is prohibitively expensive. So, before their tanks run dry, they must be sent to graveyard orbits where they won't collide with other satellites and become space junk. Fuel manufactured in space from water ice liberated from asteroids, however, could extend the operating life of a satellite.

Each month of additional service is worth another $5 million to $8 million to a communications-satellite operator, notes David Gump, DSI's chief executive officer.

SEM ? Search Engine Marketing ? World Internet Summit Speakers

A FASTER APPROACH TO GAINING BUSINESS !!!

Enhancing the presence of your website on the Internet may not be easy but it is not difficult either. There are many factors that you will have to consider. If you have a website then making it known to the visitors or the Internet users is essential without which you are not going to gain anything. marketing techniques are all interrelated but you need to know what each has got and how one is different from the other.

SEM or Search Engine marketing can have great many advantages.

Promoting a business or business activities depend(s) largely on your approach. You will have to have a goal in your mind first. It is entirely different from other forms of marketing. SEM gives off many branches of online marketing. It is, to a certain extent, not that easy to carry out. Other things that are interconnected and that even have direct relevance to Search Engine marketing are Website Design, linking or link building, Web Content or Website Content, SEO or search engine optimization Or SEO Article Submission and Online Advertising.

SEM may seem not that easy but once a technical approach is adopted then it becomes easier. Most of the businesses today are concentrating on this type of marketing because it is result-oriented.

If the work is carried out at a faster pace then it is possible that in a short period of time the desired results can be seen. marketing Strategies are inter dependent and follow a system which co-ordinates everything (that is a part of it). Search Engine marketing Strategies include website marketing which is demographical and it is entirely depended on the market research.

The focus is laid much on ?targeted keywords? and building the number of links to one?s website. Online advertising may seem to be a little bit costly for others but if you consider the importance of it or the business that you can gain by making use of it then spending the money on it will be an issue. The more you spend on, the sooner you can see the results. There can be an enormous increase in number of visitors to your site if you go for advertising online. Online Advertisement have great many advantages. You will be visible to one and all. By placing some catchy information you can win the customers.

It is true that the involvement of money on this is a bit much more than the amount of money one spends on SEO or search engine optimization. If you sit back and study these two aspects of promotion then you will come to know that both of them have the same purpose but latter is a bit slower process as it may take a lot of time to increase the visibility of your website but former one follows a much faster approach. Within a short span of time the results are much more known. You can come to know what your website status is.

Another way that is much more fruitful is Email Campaigning. It can have its own advantages. You can have lot many advantages. If you send bulk emails to your contacts or business individuals then you are going to get some good results.

SEM is really a big task. It is really not that easy but it has lot more effectiveness. Online marketing is much more dependent on this manner of promotion as well. Most of the marketers or online marketing personnel divide the SEM tasks into smaller groups and assigned each smaller group to officials who have expertise in the respective area. In this manner it becomes easier to focus much more and work properly and achieve the result. To take up any manner of promotion you will also have to study the pros and cons of it. You will have to consider your company budget as well.

Online Campaigning or Email campaigning is what most of the business organizations rely on. They know that they can have the results in a shorter period of time. Most of the times it happens that when you send bulk emails to thousands or thousands of contacts then you would probably gain responses from them. It is not always a bad luck. The promotion is much depended what you are going to offer.

Let?s address the third and oldest narrative being pushed on us by the dating-trend-du-jour articles and books out there: that men want casual sex, women want serious relationships, and that men are coercing women to get the former out of them.

This is a narrative perpetuated by many sources: popular culture, news media, academics and even the seduction community I was once involved with (more on that later). It?s the opposite of the slutty-woman double standard, and no less harmful.

Shitting on men?s sexuality and their alleged player nature is an easy way to get noticed these days:

  • The book ?Hooking Up? casts female college students as so desperate for relationships in a sea of commitment-averse guys that they?re willing to submit to one-night stands in the hope that it leads to more.
  • The New York Times? recent article on the supposed end of courtship cites only anecdotes where the guy ? never the woman ? is either too horny, too careless or too broke to pursue a relationship.
  • I?ve already written about one writer?s confused attack on men?s supposed Peter Pan complex.
  • In the Atlantic?s much-discussed ?All the Single Ladies,? our loveless heroine reduces men to ?deadbeats or playboys? and claims that in her experience, ?In many cases, the more successful a man is (or thinks he is), the less interested he is in commitment.? Even though she leads off the piece by explaining how she walked away from a seemingly great boyfriend.

There are more examples ? worse ones, too ? but you get my drift. Men want casual sex before love (if they want love at all), and women want love before sex. Right?

If only it were so simple. The onslaught of beer commercials, sitcoms and Maxim-like magazines make us seem as complex as a checkers board when we?re really a lot more like chess. Someone needs to write ?The Masculine Mystique? to get the point across, apparently.

Fortunately, there is some emerging data to back this up:

  • The University of Michigan?s Terri Conley deals a karate chop to the men-are-dogs theory in a 2011 study. Among her team?s findings: when you seek the median rather than the average number of desired sexual partners over a 30-day period, men and women want the same number: one. Also, while men usually claim more sexual partners than women, that gap disappears when both sexes think they?re taking a polygraph test.
  • Sociologist Paula England led a wide survey of college campuses, where it?s supposedly Sodom and Gomorrah these days, and found not only that ?hookup culture? is a media-created myth, but also that college men and women both want a mix of hookups and relationships. For instance, where 66 percent of the women said they hoped their most recent hookup would lead to something more, 58 percent of the guys said the same.
  • And despite at least one book?s scare tactics on sex-crazed teenage boys, the stats show that fewer teenagers are having sex and getting pregnant than their parents.

Also, not that all young women are in the mold of Karen ?F-list? Owen, but there is data to show that women can be as active in enjoying sex and delaying commitment as men are. Academics Elizabeth A. Armstrong and Laura Hamilton found this to be true.

One young woman on the How About We blog said it well: ?The hookup culture isn?t some sphere that we got trapped in because twenty-something guys and technology made it so. We, too, are opting for more freedom, more variety of experience, more sex in our twenties. It?s our hookup culture, too.?

If anything, we need more young guys gaining sexual experience so they can be prepared for relationships sooner. England?s college survey supports the theory that most of the sex is being had by about 20 percent of the students. About 25 percent of college students don?t hook up at all, and another 30 percent will hook up three times or less before they graduate. We can only speculate on how much of that abstinence is voluntary, but I?ll guess that much of it isn?t.

This brings us to my own experience. I have coached well over 100 guys on how to talk to women, and helped many more informally. Most of them had backgrounds similar to mine: they stayed inexperienced with women into their 20s or beyond, which left them frustrated and unprepared for a real relationship.

They, like me, were exposed to the same kind of rock-star playboy hype that was rampant in ?The Game? and on the websites of countless PUA gurus. They, like me, wanted a taste of this lifestyle because it seemed infinitely more fun than masturbating to porn. Some never stopped to think whether they were even cut out for a life of sleeping with different women left and right. The hype suggested that this was simply what an ?alpha male? did.

I like to think that I was above such exploitation as a coach and I?ve actively distanced myself from it, but as Rob Overman and I once discussed, I?m sure the hype got us some clientele too.

Once they were down the rabbit hole with me, though, I found most of the guys to be much like I once was: they wanted the variety because they?d never had it, but ultimately they wanted more than just casual flings.

It didn?t work out for all of them. But I?m proud to say that many of the guys I kept up with enjoyed both ends of the spectrum, from wild sexual breakthroughs to hard-earned courtships. To point out the complexity of men wanting some mix of sexual variety and commitment might not fit a convenient, Twitter-friendly headline, but it does get us much closer to the truth.

U.S. mental health experts urge focus on childhood screening

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. mental health system has huge gaps that prevent many children with psychological problems from receiving effective treatment that could prevent tragic consequences later in life, experts told U.S. lawmakers on Thursday.

Just over a month after the shooting rampage in Newtown, Connecticut, mental health experts said psychological disorders usually emerge before people enter high school but that only one-quarter of children with problems see trained professionals and often the care is not enough.

"We see the results of insufficient mental healthcare in school failure and suicide. How do we do better?" Michael Hogan, head of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, said in written testimony to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

"While the gaps in children's mental healthcare are huge, there is also reason for hope," he added. "In part, this is because we know more about what works, and what doesn't."

Hogan, a former New York mental health commissioner, was scheduled to appear with two other experts Thursday at the Senate committee's first hearing on mental health issues since the presidency of Republican George W. Bush, who set up the commission Hogan now chairs.

The hearing was scheduled in response to the shootings at Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School where Adam Lanza, a young man described as having mental issues, gunned down 26 people including 20 young children with an AR-15-type assault rifle on December 14.

The tragedy and other mass shootings in recent years have ignited a debate about gun control and mental health, including a push by President Barack Obama for stronger gun controls and better mental health training for schools and communities.

Robert Vero, chief executive of a network of Tennessee clinics called Cornerstone, said mental health professionals who work with children also lack access to parents and other relatives whose problems may contribute to a child's troubles, sometimes due to inadequate insurance coverage.

"We need to be able to teach parenting skills if we want the child's behavior to change," said Vero. "We need to be able to address the parent's depression or addiction."

The experts credited Obama's healthcare reform law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, with making a step forward by requiring insurers including Medicaid to provide coverage for mental health issues.

But they said the American social safety net still fails to provide adequate access for the poor and elderly, noting that state mental health funding declined $4 billion from 2009 to 2012 as a result of budget constraints posed by recession and the weak economic recovery.

Jump to hyperspace? Get a reality check

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: In the "Star Wars" saga, the Millennium Falcon's jump to hyperspace is totally fictional ? but if it could happen, some enterprising physics students say it wouldn't look anything like the stretched-out beams of light shown on the movie screen.
